This class will explore environmental awareness and climate change as a subject for poetry. Specifically, it will focus on local ecosystems and how to bring them to life in your writing.
We will examine the work of writers like Craig Santos Perez, Molly Fisk, Franny Choi, and Dorianne Laux.
A workshop element may be added depending on the number of students; however, my intent is to provide prompts for individual writing each week.
Week 1 will focus on crafting poetry for those who are unfamiliar with the art.
Week 2 will delve into different sources of inspiration and how we can incorporate them into our writing with various place-based prompts.
Week 3 will focus on revision techniques and how to read your own work.
Week 4 will explore poetic forms such as haiku, haibun, and pantoum, as well as concrete and erasure poems.
Week 5 will center around the use of technical and scientific language to express emotion.
Week 6 will focus on wrapping up the class and suggest some further readings/writing exercises.
