Ocean Propulsion Class Series

Ocean Propulsion Art and
                       Science Fun Class Series

Picture

Ocean Propulsion is the name of this fun and imaginative kid's class series. It refers to the way Octopuses specifically use jet propulsion to move around the ocean.

See each month's class projects by scrolling down the page.

The theme is to explore how many species travel around the ocean. We will be exploring this concept all year. The final project will be a life-sized parade of animal models and their methods of propulsion. We'll hold our parade at the pond by the lighthouse come Spring 2019.

This month is when crab fisheries season begins.

We will make marionette crabs with movable legs using a clay mold. We will make a short skit to perform for parents using our crab marionette puppets. This class will held over 2 sessions:

The first class will be making the crab legs and body out of clay and then painting it with colored slip. I will fire the parts and clear glaze them and have them ready for the next class. We will also come up with an idea for our skit and a script.

Start making drawings, paintings, sketches of students favorite ocean animal and how they move. We will plan what kind of real transport this animal will use to transport itself and it's creator across the pond for the parade. Will this animal swim, undulate, use a sail, or use paddles like fins on a fish?  Students will come up with a list of cardboard, plastic containers, milk cartons, etc. and boats needed to borrow for event (we have some floating rafts, paddle boards, canoe etc...to contribute for this adventure.)  We will use watercolors and oil pastels to make a really nice design picture this month.
